How Will We Do This?

1. Campers will be asked to carry all of their own equipment to the beach. Coaches will help to demonstrate the easiest ways to do this. Once on the beach, the campers will go for a short run, stretch and then hit the water. Physical fitness is an key part of the surfing and the more fit campers are, the more they will learn. So start training now! Take a couple of laps in the pool, ocean, etc.

2. Each day will begin with an assessment of the conditions. Campers will be asked to observe the ocean conditions. We will then explain the different conditions and how they will affect our day of surfing. Coaches will engage your camper with questions helping them to better understand the ocean and weather conditions. Discussions about the environment we surf in will take place throughout everyday.

3. In the beginning of the week we will be doing a good deal of dry land training, and working with the surfboards in the sand. Over many years our coaches have come up with a method to help campers figure out how to stand up on surfboards in very little time. Techniques such as positioning and paddling are also easily learned on the beach. Developing muscle memory is a key to a surfers success, and many repetitions will be performed on the sand.

4. Once we enter the water, we continue to discuss everything that is going on around us. Incoming waves, longshore currents, rip currents (are discussed intensely and often), the affect the tide is having on the waves, other surfers in the water, sea life, fishermen, and more are covered throughout camp.

5. The art of reading the ocean, seeing incoming waves, catching them and riding them are obviously the bread and butter of our camps and this is what we will practice most. Our experienced staff will have no problem explaining, demonstrating and assisting campers through this process. What separates Ted Shred’s camps from our competition are all of the other intangibles we cover. We aim to help new surfers understand the culture and environment that they are entering into. The confidence they will gain through learning how to surf will build self esteem.
